The Rotary Club of Laguna Phuket, in conjunction with the Avoca Beach Surf Life Saving Club from Australia and sponsored by the Australian government, organized two days of FREE full-day course of Life Saving Training (Basic First Aid and Basic Surf Rescue) on July 11-13 at the Dusit Laguna Resort Phuket, Bangtao Beach.
The training, conducted by 10 experienced Australian trainers, led by Stephen Jelf, aimed to raise awareness and educate local Thai people of surf and water safety. All agencies concerning the safety by and in the water such as government agencies, hotel operators and staff and beach guards were encouraged to take part in this opportunity.
Current President of Rotary Club of Laguna Phuket and Dusit Laguna Resort’s General Manager, Jan Verduyn said, “We have very quick responses from interested individuals and organizations, not only those in Phuket but also from Phi Phi islands and even a participant from Maui in Hawaii. It is a great opportunity for everyone, especially local people, to be aware, learn about and practice for safety.”
The first two of the three days training were for interested general public most of whom were resort and hotel staff, and the rest were beach guards, tour guides, a volunteer diver and hospital staff. One day training was dedicated for students of age about 16-17 years old from Cherngtalay Wittayakom School.
Training participants were given certificates by the Australian Life Guard Association. The Dusit Laguna Resort provided a spacious fully equipped training room with beautiful surrounding area and the lagoon and the beach.
The training, taken place indoors for theory and on the beach for practice, providing medical doctors and specialized instructor/trainers, was free of charge.
Note: Many thanks to all the supports that made this event a success: the Dusit Laguna for the beautiful and spacious venue, the Australian trainers for doing such a great job, the Australian government for its sponsorship, for all participants who came to join the training and for the media and press who continuingly helped promote the event throughout the time.
We hope to hold the similar event again next year or even more regularly.
