Charity Raft Race
(Organized by the Rotary Club Laguna Phuket)
On Sunday 24th of February 2008.

The Charity Raft Race is organized by Rotary Club of Laguna Phuket to raise funds for the various projects it has and will be undertaking, including the Tha Chat Chai fishing village, Child kidney transplantation, assistance to local community and to schools in the Thalang area.
The charity raft race is also meant to build team work, creativity and fellowship amongst the various people, staff of companies and spectators, participating in the Charity Raft Race and at the same time create a yearly fun event, bringing people together.
Teams are required to build off-site a fun raft, from all kind of materials they see fit, to hold a minimum of 5 people and a maximum of 9 people and to complete with the entire crew a parcours on the Laguna lake of approximately 800 meters, without of course the raft sinking. It is recommended that the raft is build along a theme befitting the company, society, team or association as various prizes will be donated including originality, creativity and marketing effectiveness.
The Charity Raft Race will be held and commences at the Laguna Elephant Camp (opposite Canal village), near the Y junction. Teams can bring or assemble their raft already on 23/02/2008 should they wish to do so, yet industrial spies may benefit from this. Rafts must be launched in the lagoon by 10.30 am on 24th of February 2008. Upon hearing the start shot, crew must peddle along a pre-set parcours, pick up an abandoned crew member and return to port, (Total distance +/- 800 meters if the parcours is followed in a straight line)


To enter the Raft Race

Race entry is 5,000 baht per team.
(Optional BBQ lunch costs extra at 500 THB per person. Children below 12 years old 300 THB)
A complete entry form must be entered and send to The Rotary Club of Laguna Phuket, District 3330, at either Dusit Laguna, Phuket or at any of the Wednesday Rotary meetings, before 15/12/07.

Teams build their own rafts and are expected to supply and wear their own lifejackets.

Rules

Below is an overview of the regulations to be followed during the raft race.

  1. All competitors enter at their own risk and must be 16 years of age or older. No responsibility will be accepted by the organizers for loss or damage to persons or property, howsoever caused. All participants will be expected to sign a disclaimer form before being allowed to race.
  2. All entries must pass scrutiny before the race, and will be checked for:-
    1. Life Jackets being worn by all team members.
    2. Raft numbers being clearly displayed not less than 18" in size, and clearly visible from both sides.
    3. No less than 5, and no more than 8 persons to each raft.
    4. No engines, marine hulls or row-locks.
    5. All rafts must be safely and securely constructed and are not permitted to be built of solid polystyrene.
    6. The use of water pumps is strictly prohibited on Health and Safety grounds and use of such may result in prosecution.
    7. Having completed registration before the start.
  3. All rafts must attend the start point in an orderly fashion
  4. All rafts must be removed from the lake course and shore sites on the day of the race
  5. Please read the WATER SAFETY notes as following ;

 WATER SAFETY
  You are reminded that the consumption of alcohol before or during the race is extremely dangerous. It increases the risk of accidents, hypothermia and possible drowning.

Health & Safety 


Rafters Must:
  be 16 years old or more
  wear a life jacket which the rafter must provide
  be able to swim whilst clothed in moving water
  are strongly advised to avoid drinking alcohol before and during the race because of the increased risk of hypothermia, injury or even drowning.
   Desist from interfering with other rafts or rafters.

Your team must all be 16 years of age or older and must wear a life-jacket. The Raft has to be provided (and be taken away afterwards) by you and there are prizes for all male, all female and mixed teams as well as the best fancy team dress, best original design raft, most efficient raft, most creative raft ,……,…… and a special Rotary Club of Laguna Phuket ‘best effort' award.
